Finding Inspiration Through Casing a Designer | #GDP528

Casing Inspiration: Three Unique Card Designs

A card design featuring pink flowers and blue accents, with a stamped greeting saying 'Thinking of you,' framed by a gray vertical panel, and a pink border.

I don’t know about you, but inspiration is often one of the hardest parts of creating. Looking at what you have and figuring out how to turn it into something that not only speaks to you—but to others as well—can feel overwhelming at times. That’s where casing comes into play.

Casing (Copy And Share Everything) is one of my favorite ways to spark creativity. I often look to other designers when I need a jump-start, and the Global Design Project – Case the Designer challenges are a perfect source of inspiration.

This week we cased designer Ann Alexander, and during my live I shared how I pulled different elements from her card to inspire three very different designs of my own.

Card One – Same Layout, New Look

A handmade card featuring a botanical illustration of leaves in white on a textured blue background, with a greeting that says 'to a great guy'.

For my first card, I stayed fairly true to the original layout, but changed things up by using very different colors and imagery. I started with one of the new suites coming in January, Nature Walk (#166936), and used several elements from the suite including the stamp set, dies, Designer Series Paper, and embellishments.

To keep this card simple, I let the DSP do most of the work and added a stamped leaf image in Secret Sea along with a simple greeting. This is a great example of how keeping the layout but changing the products can completely transform a design.

Card Two – Color Combo with a Twist

Card featuring a floral arrangement in a cup with a greeting that says 'HERE'S TO YOU!', set against a layered background of gray and pink.

For my second card, I wanted to focus more on the color inspiration while still using the basic design—this time with a bit of a twist. Because the floral image in Weekend Adventures (#167318) isn’t a large focal image like the cased card, I chose to frame it using the Everyday Arches Dies (#164629).

I stamped the image on Watercolor Paper (#149612) and colored it using Water Painters (#168253) with ink pads for a soft, blended look. The greeting was heat-embossed in white on black cardstock and punched out using the Banner Sayings Bundle (#167051).

To add texture, I used the Lovely Stripes 3D Embossing Folder (#167179 – coming in January) and kept the color palette clean and bold with Melon Mambo and Smoky Slate cardstock. I finished the card with Muted Palette Dots (#165155) for a subtle pop of detail.

Card Three – Smaller Scale, Same Inspiration

My final card is the one I demonstrated during the live. I kept the same core color palette from card two, but added Balmy Blue and Pretty in Pink cardstock for a softer feel.

This time, I resized the layout to better fit the smaller image by cutting the design down and adjusting the focal point. I also flipped the card and went with a horizontal design rather than a vertical one. I layered Balmy Blue Sheer Ribbon (#165767) behind the image and finished the card with Rhinestone Basic Jewels for just the right amount of sparkle.

A Simple Splatter Technique (Used on All Three Cards)

Across all three cards, I used one of my favorite easy splatter techniques with ink pads and Water Painters. What I love about this method is how versatile it is—you can splatter in any color, make the drops big or small, and it won’t ruin your marker tips or waste ink.

Be sure to watch the video to see just how quick and easy this technique really is!

One Design, Endless Possibilities

A display of three unique greeting cards featuring floral designs, each in different color schemes and layouts. The cards showcase a mix of elements such as stamped images, embellishments, and various backgrounds.

Seeing all three cards together really highlights why I love casing a designer so much. Even though each card was inspired by the same original design, they each have their own personality.

  • One focuses on layout with a fresh color palette
  • One leans into color inspiration with a bold, textured feel
  • And one adjusts the scale and proportions to better fit the image

By changing just a few key elements—colors, focal point size, textures, and embellishments—you can completely transform a design while still honoring the original inspiration.

The final result is three different and unique cards, all sparked by the same design. That’s the beauty of casing—it’s not about copying, it’s about letting someone else’s creativity jump-start your own.

So the next time you’re feeling stuck, take a look at the work of designers you admire and see what elements you can borrow to get your creativity flowing. Let their creativity spark your own. Remember—there’s no right or wrong way to case a card. The goal is simply to get those creative juices flowing and make it yours.

Scrapped! Episode 30 – Gratitude Mini Album

A Beautiful Way to Celebrate What Matters Most

November always inspires me to slow down and reflect on the things I’m most grateful for. For Scrapped! Episode 30, I wanted to create something that captured those heartfelt moments in a way I could revisit year after year. Instead of a traditional scrapbook page, I designed a Gratitude Mini Album—a keepsake filled with texture, layers, and interactive elements that make memory keeping both meaningful and fun.

This mini album is built using our Flip Flaps and features gorgeous pull-outs, flaps, pockets, and hidden journaling spots. It’s the perfect way to document gratitude, seasonal reflections, or family traditions during the holidays. And because the album structure is so versatile, you can recreate it for any theme—thankfulness, celebrations, travel, or even a yearly highlight book.

🎥 Be sure to watch the episode for a closer look at how the project comes together and ideas for customizing your own album.

About the Album

For this project, I started with chipboard (the kind that comes in Paper Pumpkin kits or many of our other crafting kits—recycling win!) to create sturdy front and back covers. The inside includes multiple sizes of Flip Flaps, thoughtful fold-outs, a waterfall element, reinforced center pages, and plenty of spaces for photos, journaling, and decorative touches.

Once the structure was built, I decorated the album using the warm, earthy tones of the Gathering Together Suite (165987), which felt absolutely perfect for a gratitude theme. The stamps, dies, textures, and embellishments all came together beautifully to create a heartfelt, cozy design.

Featured Products

Gathering Together Suite (#165987)

  • Gathering Moments Stamp Set (#165970)
  • Gathering Moments Dies (#165979)
  • Gathering Together Designer Series Paper (#165969)
  • Gathering Leaves Embossing Folder (#165983)
  • Early Espresso & Old Olive Baker’s Twine Combo (#165986)
  • Cajun Craze and Gold Dots Embellishments (#165984)

I also pulled sentiments and decorative elements from:

  • Just a Note Stamp Set (#166098) + Dies (#166101)
  • Our Story Stamp Set (#167109)
  • Celebrate Together Stamp Set (#166655)

The color palette—Basic Beige, Cajun Craze, Crushed Curry, Early Espresso, Old Olive, and Champagne Foil—set the warm and inviting tone that makes this mini album feel extra special.

I loved this project so much that I’m already working on a Christmas version with a fun twist on the layout—so stay tuned!

Day 28 – Cardinals in Winter with Silent Sparkle

A Peaceful CASE of GDP524 Inspired by Cordula De

Today’s themes were all about the quiet beauty of winter—the hush of falling snow and the peaceful stillness it brings. When I saw the prompt, I immediately thought of the Global Design Project #GDP524, where we were challenged to CASE a gorgeous winter design by Cordula De. It was the perfect layout and technique for today’s soft, serene inspiration.

I’ve admired so many beautiful samples created for this challenge, and I wanted to keep my version simple and close to the original. The result is a calm, snowy design with just a touch of sparkle and one bright, cheerful pop of cardinal red.

❄️ Snowflakes & Soft Winter Hues

For the snowflakes since I don’t have the current set, I reached for the retired Joyful Flurry (#159804) stamp set. It was just the right style—delicate and elegant—for a peaceful winter card.

Color combo:

  • Pool Party
  • Lost Lagoon

Soft, icy, and perfect for silent snowfall vibes.

To build the background, I used a sneak peek of an upcoming product—
the Lovely Stripes 3D Embossing Folder (#167179).
It added gorgeous texture without overwhelming the design.

🟥 Adding a Subtle Cardinal Touch

The cardinal element turned out to be trickier than I expected—I realized I don’t have many bird stamps! But tucked deep in my stash, I found the perfect tiny cardinal in the very old Jolly Bingo Bits set. It was just the right size for a small pop of color without taking over the card.

I colored the little bird using my Stampin’ Write Markers (hot tip: these are on the Last Chance List, so make sure you grab yours before they’re gone!). I fussy-cut the cardinal and popped it up with a Mini Dimensional.

🎨 Masking, Texturing & Sparkling

For the main technique:

  1. I cut a piece of Masking Paper (#155480) to 1″ × 2-3/4″.
  2. I placed it where I wanted my sentiment to be, then stamped my snowflakes.
  3. For the two larger snowflakes, I stamped off first to soften the look.
  4. The smallest snowflake was stamped full strength for contrast.
  5. A little Wink of Stella added the perfect bit of winter sparkle.

To add texture to the focal panel, I lightly distressed the edges with the side of my scissors. It gives such a soft, handcrafted look.

And while the card didn’t need ribbon… I really loved the gentle touch it added.
I tucked a strip of the retired White Woven Ribbon (#164634) behind the focal piece and tied a tiny knotted embellishment with a Mini Glue Dot.

Quick, Easy, & Peacefully Wintery

This card came together so quickly—and I absolutely love the gentle, snowy look paired with that tiny burst of cardinal red. It’s amazing how a simple design can carry so much quiet charm.

Day 23 – Elfie Time!

Fun Fold Gift Card Holder + Sketch Challenge #5

Today’s theme was Elfie Time, and the moment I read it, I knew exactly which stamp set I had to pull out—my beloved retired #Elfie (#150509). Pairing it with Sketch Challenge #5 inspired a playful twist: a Fun Fold Gift Card Holder!

This design is so easy to create and perfect for the holidays—because who doesn’t love receiving (or giving!) a cute handmade gift card holder?

I shared the full tutorial during a live in the Card A Day in November 2025 group as well as on my YouTube and Facebook pages. If you missed it, no worries—you can still catch the replay. And huge thanks to Kevin for inviting me on to share this project!

🎁 How to Make the Fun Fold Gift Card Holder

This fold comes together quickly and can be decorated for any theme or season. Here’s the basic template:

Card Base

  • Cut: 9-1/2″ x 5-1/2″
  • Score at: 3-1/2″ and 7-1/2″
    This creates:
  • A 3-1/4″ panel (the main front)
  • A 4-1/4″ panel (the inside)
  • A 2″ flap (perfect for the pocket)

Belly Band

  • Cut: 1-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ (or longer depending on embellishments)
  • Wrap loosely around the card so it slides easily.

Gift Card Cutout

You’ll need circle punches or dies:

  • 1-3/4″ for the pocket opening (#119850)
  • 2″ for the decorative circle layer (#133782)

Interior Layer

If you’re using a different color inside:

  • Cut 2-1/2″ x 5-1/4″
  • Make sure it extends past the punched opening for a clean look.

Tools That Help

  • Bone folder (#102300)
  • Tear & Tape (#154031)
  • Mini Glue Dots (#103683)
  • Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals (#144108)
  • Circle punches/dies

And then… decorate to your heart’s content!

🧝 Elfie Samples

Of course I made more than one! Here’s what I used:

Elfie Cards

Color combos:

  • Poppy Parade, Pool Party, Summer Splash
    Others:
    • White Baker’s Twine (#155475)
    • Real Red & White Peppermint Embellishments (#164050)
    • Strawberry Slush and Pretty in Pink Gems (#165615)
    • Forever Plaid Embossing Folder (#164049)
    • A Little Cheer (#166121)
    • Stylish Shapes Dies (#159183)
    • Wink of Stella (#141897)
    • Blending Brush (#160518)
    • Masking Paper (#155480)
    • Blends – Poppy Parade, Summer Splash, Pool Party, Pecan Pie, Petal Pink, Pretty in Pink

Both versions turned out adorable and festive!

❄️ Additional Sample – Christmas Cuties

I also made a version using the retired Christmas Cuties (#139787) paired with the Need for Tweed Designer Series Paper (#166144) for a quick, textured background.

Color combo:

  • Mossy Meadow, Old Olive, Cherry Cobbler
    Others:
    • Real Red Baker’s Twine (#164051)
    • Shimmer Star Foam Stickers (#166202)
    • A Little Cheer (#166121)
    • Perennial Postage Dies (#162607)

A different look but just as charming!

🎄 Do You Love This Fun Fold as Much as I Do?

I adore how quick and adaptable this Fun Fold Gift Card Holder is, and I can’t wait to see what you create with it!

👼✨ Day 17 – Caroling Crew & Joy to the World

Day 17 paired Caroling Crew with Joy to the World — and these two themes came together perfectly!

Originally, I planned to pull out an older stamp set for this challenge… but the creative spark took over again, and I ended up making some holiday punch/die art magic instead. And honestly? I think you’re going to love what came out of this one!

I started by looking through my current sets for unexpected shapes and pieces I could repurpose. My eyes kept returning to the Bee My Valentine Stamp Set and matching punch — specifically the bee wings. And then it hit me…

Angel wings!

From there, the ideas flowed as I searched my stash for more pieces to build a sweet holiday angel. Here’s everything I used and how I transformed each element:

👼 Angel Punch-Art Breakdown

Bee My Valentine Stamp Set (#162546) + Punch (#162553)

  • Bee Body (Head): Stamped in Petal Pink on white cardstock – be sure to cut off the stinger.
  • Bee Wings (Angel Wings): Pool Party stamped on white — stamped off for the base, full strength for the outline + Wink of Stella for shimmer
  • Bee Wings (Hair): Punch only (no stamping) –
    • Early Espresso cardstock
    • You will need a total of 7
    • One will be punched with the Bee Body to create bangs with the heart arches on the inside.
  • Eyes: Created by masking the bee’s smile stamp to isolate the smile only for the “eye” shapes

Swirled Designs Dies (#167032)

  • Halo: Small oval cut in Gold Foil Sheets (#132622)

Ornamental Christmas Dies (#166000)

  • Dress: Christmas tree die (I used the shorter one with double flares) cut from Peaceful Garden Glimmer Paper (#165929)

Alphabet à La Mode Dies (#160750)

  • Mouth: Inside cut of the number “6” (cut from black cardstock)

Gift of Joy Stamp Set (#169238)

  • Garland: Stamped in Pool Party + Wink of Stella, trimmed to size
  • Hands: Petal Pink stamped on white — created using the inside of the ornament stamp, cut apart
  • Song Book: Stamped in Versamark and heat-embossed in gold on Gold Foil Sheets (#132622), trimmed and scored down the center to give it dimension

Sentiment

  • “Merry” and “Christmas” stamped in Azure Afternoon
  • Punched with the Three Banner Punch (#167050)
A layout of various punched and stamped elements for a holiday angel project, including parts labeled for the bee body, halo, mouth, garland, and more, showcased on a white sheet.

🌟 Background Details

  • Everyday Arches Dies (#164629):
    • Main arch in Balmy Blue, embossed (I used the retired Merry Melody #156392) and brushed lightly with white ink
    • Larger white arch behind for a layered frame
  • Card Base: Azure Afternoon
    • Background stamped with the leaf-fill image from Gift of Joy to add depth
  • Ribbon: Sheer Balmy Blue Ribbon (#165767)
  • Adhesives: Lots of dimensionals + mini glue dots to build the layered angel

The result?
✨ A super fun, whimsical work of art that brings both joy and creative surprise to the holiday season.

☃️ Day 10 – Snowman Shenanigans & a Magical Color Twist

I had such a blast sharing today’s card during my live! This fun fold card is bursting with sparkle and holiday cheer — from the unexpected color combo of purples and greens to the whimsical twist on Snowman Shenanigans, I think you’re going to fall in love with this one just like I did. 💜💚✨

This card came together with a mix of creativity, experimentation, and a few surprises along the way. I used a lot of different products — including one very unexpected element!

I pulled pieces from the Darling Dinos (#164728) set again, but this time instead of dino-deer, I used them in a whole new way. Combined with the Light & Wonder Dies (#165762), I created the sweetest little snowman that’s sure to melt your heart. ☃️💖

To bring in more holiday magic, I added details and greetings from:
🎄 A Little Cheer Stamp Set (#166121)
🎅 Pine Tree Trimmings Stamp Set (#166040)
🌟 Pine Tree Trimmings Dies (#166046)

🎨 Color Palette Magic

For my color palette, I experimented with two different combos to capture the challenge colors — Concord and 9th —Plumberry, Rainforest, and Lilac.

As these are not Stampin’ Up! colors I had to adjust a bit. I started with my first color combo but after seeing some of the challenge samples, I decided to tweak the colors a bit to better match the prompt.

Which one is your favorite?

💜 First Combo: Mossy Meadow, Petunia Pop, and Berry Burst

  • Spooky Sweet DSP (#166191)

💚 Second Combo (used in my live): Blackberry Bliss, Pretty Peacock, and Fresh Freesia

  • Season of Elegance DSP (#164144)

Both versions share some fun common touches — I used Pool Party for the snow and Pecan Pie for the tree trunks and snowman twigs. ✨

To finish off the sparkle, I added:

  • Wink of Stella (#141897) for shimmer
  • Petunia Pop Iridescent Ribbon (#166203) for a soft, festive glow
  • Frosted Iridescent Dots (#165766) for a frosty finishing touch

These details gave the card just the right amount of shine and magic!

📏 I’ve included a picture of the measurements if you’d like to recreate this easy yet enchanting fun fold card yourself — it’s simple, sparkly, and so much fun to make!

A hand-drawn template showing measurements and scoring instructions for a fun fold card, labeled with dimensions and cut lines.

✨ If you missed my live, be sure to catch the replay and see how it all came together step-by-step! Plus you’ll want to catch the magic in action to see how this fun fold card opens to add surprise and delight to the receiver.
